My horse has developed bald patches of skin.No crusty areas, inflamation or scratching. What is it.?

My horse is 3 years old. He has bald patches on his face, thigh, withers, and belly. Also, he is buckskin in color and where there is apparent "normal" hedding, the new hair growth is Grulla in color. I have not seen him itching. The spots are the size of a small dinner plate. The bare skin is not crusty, swollen, or red and does not appear to be irritated in any way. Does anyone have any idea of what this might be? There are no flies uot yet. Also I have him on a wait gainer/coat inhancer supplement (for 2 weeks now) could ths have anything to do with it?

One form of dermatitis in horses is known as the Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex is one that has no itch or scabbing.

In horses, the lesions that result from the disease are nodular, do not ulcerate, and do not itch. They often occur in the saddle area and have a gray-white central core.

Horses with multiple lesions can be treated with oral prednisone or prednisolone which you can get from the vet.

Youre best bet tho is to get a skin scraping and have it tested for bacteria, or to see if its anything at all.

Best of luck.
Reply:Is he out in the rain without any cover? You need to call a vet.
Reply:Your horse might be having a reaction to the supplement. Some horses are more sensitive than others, it's a natural thing. I would take him off the supplement and call the vet. If it's not the supplement I'd say it might be a fungus, akin to rain rot or maybe even ringworm. (Just ideas.) Either way, call your vet. He or She can do bloodwork and other tests to give you a better idea of treatment.
Reply:There is the possibility that the horse is just shedding. Some horses will shed the hair right down to the skin. You should still give the vet a call.
